Greg –
I’m a poncho guy. I find that rain jackets end up making you sweat & don’t breathe well so you’re going to end up wet on the inside regardless. I like that ponchos allow good ventilation & they’re more versatile than a jacket. It can cover you & your backpack. It can be turned into a less-than-ideal tarp, but a tarp nonetheless. Plus it’s way cheaper than a rain jacket.
This poncho isn’t like a Dollar Store/Walmart disposable one, nor is it a Gore-Tex bank-breaker. It sits nicely in the middle, material-wise. It’s lightly reinforced with a grid that won’t just shred the minute it touches something. It’s certainly not something I’d want to go bushwacking in, but it’s also cheap enough to be easily replaced after you do.
It has grommets on it so you can set it up as a legit tarp after you un-snap the sides.
It’s plenty big to cover you and your backpack.
The side snaps seem like they’d break or rip out easily, so I go very easy on them.
It’s got a front pocket that is big enough for a cell phone & wallet. It’s separated from the rest of the poncho so you can put a wet item in and it won’t soak through.
The hood has a good-sized visor on it to keep drips off your face & can be comfortably tightened with a drawstring.
Seams are taped to ensure very good waterproofing.
Packs into a pouch of the same material & drawstring as the poncho. It packs in tightly and fairly easily. I can see the pouch tearing down its seam if it’s not treated gently. The fully-stuffed pouch is the size of a water bottle but could be compressed significantly smaller and weighs just over 300g according to my Starfrit food scale (https://amzn.to/41ThvXp).
